SFXCU under the Belize Credit Union League is regulated by the Central Bank of Belize and governed by an elected Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee and Credit Committee.
St. Francis Xavier Credit Union was officially registered on February 23, 1948, with Certificate of Registration #6. Guided by the vision of the late Rev. Henry Suttie, S.J., the Credit Union was born out of a simple but powerful idea: that families in Corozal could build stronger futures by pooling their resources and helping one another. In its early years, SFXCU flourished and quickly became a trusted partner in the community.
The dream faced its first significant test in 1955, when Hurricane Janet devastated Corozal. The destruction left many families struggling to rebuild their lives. With so many unable to meet their obligations, loan delinquency grew, and the Credit Union went into dormancy. These were difficult years, when it seemed the vision might not survive.
Hope returned in December 1979 when Rev. James P. Walsh, S.J., saw the potential to breathe life back into the Credit Union. He brought together a small group of sixteen teachers and parish staff, believing that the Credit Union could once again become a pillar of strength for the community. From those humble beginnings, the reorganization took shape.
Among the parish staff was a young man named Mr. Vicente Canul. Entrusted with the role of manager, he embraced the challenge with dedication and vision. Under his leadership, the Credit Union began to grow steadily, laying down the foundation for the institution we know today. Mr. Canul’s commitment to service and his faith in the mission of the Credit Union remain central to our story.
Under the pivotal leadership of Mr. Vicente Canul we were able to become one of the largest Credit Union in the country with the establishment of three branches which are in Sarteneja Village, San Pedro Village and Caye Caulker Village.
