Origins of the Credit Union
St. Francis Xavier Credit Union Ltd. was originally founded in 1947 by Rev. Henry Suttie S.J., but it remained small and financially fragile until its revitalization in December 1979 under the leadership of Fr. James Walsh S.J., marking the start of its sustained growth.
Branch Establishment and Growth
- The Caye Caulker Branch Onboarded its first member in November
- On March 15, 2006, the Registrar of Credit Unions approved the opening of the Caye Caulker Branch.
- The financial market at the time was limited to only Atlantic Bank As such to provide an alternative to the islanders SFXCU was welcomed by the people.
- Initially, operations were overseen by the then-general manager, along with other staff. The credit union operated from the Caye Caulker’s Community Centre with only weekly visits and no day-to-day operations up until March 2007 when they started operating from an office on Avenida Hicaco, Caye Caulker Village.
- In June 2009, SFXCU relocated to a new office on Avenida Langosta, in which it still continues to serves its membership from.
- The branch experienced steady growth: by March 31, 2012, it had about 775 members and $1.2 million in assets.
- In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, membership climbed to 1316 and assets totalling approximately $6.7 million.
- SFXCU remains the second longest serving financial institution in Caye Caulker Village, proudly serving its members for the past 19+ years.
