Origins of the Credit Union

St. Francis Xavier Credit Union Ltd. was originally founded in 1947 by Rev. Henry Suttie S.J., but it remained small and financially fragile until its revitalization in December 1979 under the leadership of Fr. James Walsh S.J., marking the start of its sustained growth.

Branch Establishment and Growth

  • The branch experienced rapid growth: by March 31, 2012, it had about 2,991 members and $4.4 million in assets. On November 10, 2012, it moved into its own dedicated office building at Pescador Drive and Ambergris Street in San Pedro Town.
  • In the 2017–2018 fiscal year, membership climbed to 4,919, with assets totalling approximately $14.4 million. The branch had a staff of 10 employees, was fully automated, and provided 24-hour international ATM services.
  • In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, membership climbed to 5,334 with assets totalling approximately $20.3 million.

Community Engagement

As early as May 2014, the San Pedro branch actively reached out to the youth, visiting San Pedro High School to encourage saving habits through initiatives like a “Mad City Money” financial literacy activity. This was part of SFXCU’s broader educational mission, which included student savings and grants.
